Involving Relatives in Business

In some cultures people involve their relatives in running of businesses. I am not sure in Tanzanian culture if this is very successful.  I have heard complaints from people on how their businesses die because of relatives.

There are two aspects of relatives and their involvement in your business that I will discuss.

When you own a small establishment some relatives would think if they want something they can get it at a discount, or even for free!
Imagine someone with a small Kiosk , selling food items and every day one relative comes along and asks for sugar let’s say, promising to pay the following week.  At the end of the week you get a totally different story, I will get you the money, things have been tight. How ironic.

Maybe we should be taught in entrepreneurial studies how to deal with such cases.

I have one principle that could sound harsh, but at the end of the day it’s for the livelihood of my business. If you come to buy something, come with enough money. If by any chance you bought more stuff than the cash you have in hand, no worries, we set a date for payment. Come that day, I will remind you like I would remind any other customer of mine .In fact I would hassle you like there’s no tomorrow. Come on, its business for Gods’ sake, nothing personal!

On another note, having relatives run your business can be tricky. There’s that employer/employee relationship that has to be there but also there is the relative aspect that also has to be there. Both should be considered in the right proportion but neither party should take advantage of the other because of that relationship.
If I am to pay you on time, I will pay you like I would pay any other employee, and if you are to need permission for a day off or emergency, you should follow the same procedures as any other employee.

It is so easy to lay these ground rules, but implementation is the problem.

Time management , do you value time?

So you  agree to meet someone on a particular day at a specific time, let's say 11.00 am , come 10.55 am you are at the meeting point waiting. Come 11.20 am you are still waiting. At 11.30am you call him/her and  they tell you "I will be right there, there's traffic". At 11.45am s/he walks in and  utter the words"there was so much traffic along the way".

I get into these situations a lot! It literally makes me mad! If I can leave whatever I am doing and honor the promise of meeting you at the agreed time, why can't you do the same? I know there's traffic, but I do my calculations very well, give myself maybe half an hour of traffic time or more depending on the distance.

Tardiness tells a lot about a person. It shows how irresponsible a person is or unreliable. If I were to hook you up with a job opportunity or a business opportunity, yet you do not value time, how sure am I that you will deliver?

The notion of "Tanzanian time" will never go away. People invite guests to parties and weddings and put the time as 6pm knowing very well that the event starts at 8pm. They do this not with any bad intentions, but with the knowledge and understanding that people can never keep time.  In official meetings you agree a set time but 50% of the people will be late.

Are you one of those people who like keeping others waiting? Or are you one of those who are said to have "kiherehere" in Swahili, who is always on time?
After always going to events and meetings on time, I once decided to try out going late.I arrived at the event an hour and a half late thinking  most people will be there by then. The surprise I got..........I was the only guest there!!!!

Kim K filing for Divorce

For people following the Kardashian family and their shenanigans yesterday was just another day. So after 72 days Kim Kardashian who got married to Kris Humphries , is filing for divorce. I wonder if its a surprise for many . To me its no surprise. The whole wedding was too good to be true. People have different reasons for getting married and I guess love is not one of them these days.
The wedding was an expensive one and with the bride having numerous changes of gowns.......was it just a reason to shine in the spotlight? Well it worked. And it worked again yesterday when she filed for divorce.
Oh well, all is well that ends well.
i wonder if the same thing can happen to our superstars in Bongo or they would just stomach  all the pain, hatred, and all the unpleasantness that comes with being a famous couple. If you split up, what will people say.....
