Overcoming the fear of Presenting

I recently asked a University graduate if she can do a presentation in front of many people. She said yes but not more than 40 people. For a university graduate that is not so bad, although it was clearly evident to me that the response I got was just to make me happy!

In Universities here in Tanzania, we have normal lectures and "Seminars". In Seminars students have group assignments and presentations. The groups in one Seminar are sometimes 40 students or so. Most students have a hard time presenting in front of their fellow students. The thought of standing up and discussing a topic and everyone is looking at you is kind of scary!!!

It is not easy to stand in front of people and stare them straight in the eye and actually make them listen to you.  Presentation Skills are very important in the world we live in today, there is no way we can escape making presentations. If you want to be someone and to shine in your particular field, surely you need to have the ability to stand up and face people.

A lawyer would need to have good presentation skills to argue a case in the court room. It is expected of a lawyer to stand up and face the jury, the judge, the audience. It comes with the profession.

Public Relations people face the public, the press as part of their day to day activities. With a fear of standing in front of people, one cannot excel in this profession.

The two examples are just a few to illustrate the importance of presentation skills in the world and how the absence of good presentation skills can bring a person down.

Some tips I was given once about presenting in front of people that have really helped me to date are:-
  •    Find a person you are most comfortable with in the crowd and keep your eyes fixed on them throughout the presentation. This will make you comfortable and will give you an impression that s/he is the only person in the room.
  •   Find a spot on the wall right in front of you and keep your eyes fixed there while speaking. Everyone will think you are looking at someone behind them when in actual fact you are staring at the wall.
  •  Make sure you have all your facts and anticipate questions that you know could come up. This will enable you to answer all questions confidently.
So the next time you know you have a presentation,  fully equip yourself with the content of the presentation, follow the tips above and knock them dead!
