Celebrating 50 Years of Independence

Finally it is 50 Years since gaining independence of Tanganyika from British rule which was on 9th December 1961.There has been a lot of talk about 50 years after Independence and where we are now. Different analyses have been done on the various changes that have befallen the Economy, Education, Health Services, Entertainment Sectors just to mention a few.

Government Ministries have been holding exhibitions and week long events to commemorate this milestone. At first I did not understand why each Ministry feels the need to put up humongous Billboard signs which say, “Celebrating 50 Years of Independence” or why they should have exhibitions!

My first thought, like any other money conscious person was “Why spend all that money just for a billboard?”

In my limited understanding of Advertising, such media are used to create awareness of a product or service. For Corporates it is fine to advertise and inform the general public of the availability of products and services. As for a ministry celebrating 50 years since it was formed, I don’t think it is a good use of Government Resources. If it was done through Print Media, I personally think it would be okay.

If this task of arranging the ‘celebrations’ was given to me, would select a weekend or 3 consecutive days where all the Ministries can have their exhibitions and celebrations. That way we can save a lot of the much needed resources of the Government. But then again, there are could be reasons and justifications of holding such celebrations……that are not very visible to the normal Tanzanians’ eye!
